As the semester_2 mechatronics project, it was decided by our team to produce a device which is capable of automatically drawing a design to a given physical platform when the relevant design is input by a computer.

Objectives

The objective was to familiarize with programming, sensors and actuators which are commonly used in mechatronic systems.

Fabricate a prototype of the proposed system.

Motivation

Still the carvings and designs on wood are manually done by carpenters using conventional tools. In that sense, a product with good finish and appearance requires both skill and experience. Even for a skilled carpenter, it is difficult to draw a complex design in one shot.

Hence it was decided to build the TERA Paint which will be a useful automated tool for a carpenter. He can draw his idea on the computer precisely using user friendly modern software today and make that into a physical reality by using the proposed device.

Materials used

  • Stepper Motors (NEMA 16, NEMA17)

  • Servo Motor

  • Microcontrollers, motor drivers

  • Thread bar, timing belts and lathed components (coupler, pulley)

  • Power adapters

  • Wood, Aluminum

Process Flow

Arduino UNO was used as the main controller with the GRBL library. Inkscape was used for designing purposes and to generate the G-code. The Universal Gcode Sender was used to send the G-code from the computer to the Arduino ( Arduino with the GRBL library).

I was the leader of the project. I was involved in designing, programming, wiring and fabrication of the prototype.

Overall, the project was a success. The team members could achieve the objectives. There were few drawbacks with the mechanical system since we had no much experience with mechanical designing. Apart from that, the controlling and process flow went smoothly so that the evaluation team was pretty impressed.
